Frequently Asked Questions
ABOUT THE CARICATURE
WHAT'S SPECIAL ABOUT MY CARICATURES?
Caricatures in themselves are always a special gift, there are few gifts that are so personal. My caricatures are less exaggerated than many other caricaturists and you could say that they are half way between portraits and typical caricatures. I really do want to ‘bring out the best bits’! My caricatures are also completely hand drawn originals and with 25 years experience I know how much joy they bring to the recipients. Maybe reading through my Testimonials might be of help to you.
For most caricatures A4 or A3 is perfect. But you can contact me and indicate the paper size that best suits either your budget or your wall space, or if you have a large number of people that you want included in your caricature. ( If you opt for a special paper size, it might be a good idea that you first find a frame that fits your needs / budget and I will cut my paper to suit your needs )
WAIST UP OR FULL BODY? WITH OR WITHOUT BACKGROUNDS?
It really is up to you. Waist up costs less and may suit your budget requirements or wall space. Full body costs more but can feel more complete, and if you include background detail it can really be a very special gift full of meaning and significance to the person/people receiving your gift. Maybe just have a look at my gallery and it might help you decide.
WHAT IS A THEME?
Unlike photos or portraits one of the special aspects of caricatures is that you can personalize the drawing to suit the person receiving it. The best way to do that is to have the person doing something in the drawing. This gives the drawing more meaning, energy and interest and we call that “the theme”.
WHAT SORT OF THEMES CAN I CHOOSE?
For single caricatures it’s usually something to do with their favorite hobbies, sports or interests. For couples it might be a romantic theme, maybe it’s for an anniversary, which typically might have them toasting champagne and the number of years on the champagne bottle label. Or it might be the beach, or them camping. But it can be anything at all really. For some ideas on the right theme for you just have a look at my gallery.
WHAT IS A PROP? HOW MANY PROPS DO I WANT / NEED?
A prop is a small object that is included in the drawing to depict the theme or activity that you have chosen. For instance, if you have chosen football as your theme, the ‘prop’ could be a football or a team jumper. This usually doesn’t include cars/trucks/motorbikes etc. for a full explanation see the following FAQ question. You can either determine the right number of props by how much you want to spend or by the level of meaning you want the caricature to have.
I WANT TO HAVE A CAR / TRUCK / MOTORBIKE AND/OR ANIMAL TO BE INCLUDED, WILL THAT COST MORE?
My prices are calculated by the amount of time needed to complete the drawing, so if the vehicle is small and in the background it will be counted as a prop and hence included in the price. If the vehicle is to be larger and proportional to the person/people in the caricature there is an additional $50 charge for black and white caricatures and $80 for color caricatures. The same principle applies to animals or pets. If the animal is small (small dog/cat etc.) or it is to be drawn in the background or only drawn partially (head only) it is counted as a prop and included in the price. If it is a larger dog or horse etc. there is an additional $50 charge for black and white caricatures and $80 for color caricatures.
MATERIALS AND TECHNIQUE
My black and white caricatures are drawn in pencil and oil paints using a dry brush technique on a premium uncoated, bright white 135gsm paper sourced directly from a local paper supplier. My color caricatures are drawn in ink and watercolor on high quality 100% cotton 185gsm watercolor paper.
CAN I GET A DRAFT SKETCH?
I have been working as a caricaturist for 25 years and done thousands of caricatures, 99% without requiring drafts. If you feel you want a draft, no problem, just contact me and we can determine what is appropriate.
ABOUT YOUR PHOTOS
WHAT ARE THE BEST PHOTOS TO SEND?
Recent close ups with big grins are usually best. That should include a current or typical hairstyle. No hats or sunglasses please, If I can’t see it I can’t draw it.And please make sure I can see the whole face and head, selfies often crop out bits and pieces, not very helpful when you’re trying to work out the shape of things. It’s also really (really) important that photos are well lit, sharp and clear. Maybe have a look at a sample reference photo to better understand what I need.
HOW MANY PHOTOS DO I NEED TO SEND?
If it’s the right one, often even just one photo will do. If you’re not sure send as many as you want.If there is more than one person in the photo make sure you let me know who is to be drawn, clearly indicating their name and which one they are in the photograph.
ABOUT GROUP CARICATURES
REFERENCE PHOTOS FOR GROUP CARICATURES
Group caricatures are the same as any other caricature (see ABOUT YOUR PHOTOS above) I just need more photos. Single photos of each person are usually best but if you don’t have individual photos send me what you have and I will let you know if there are any problems.
HOW MUCH DOES A GROUP CARICATURE COST?
Group Caricatures start at $50 per person for the waist up option / $60 per person for Full Body Group Caricatures. Things get a little tricky when more complex themes are required, but all that often means is an additional charge for the background (usually between $50-100). So as a guide $50-60 per person is usually a good indication of your cost. Again, if you’ve got any questions please contact me.
ABOUT COMPLETION TIMES
ABOUT COMPLETION TIMES
Black and white caricature usually take 7-10 days from when I have everything I need to be able to start work on your caricature. Color caricatures take longer, usually 14-20 days. You sure can. Just contact me with the day/times of your event and I will let you know availability and costs.

For non digital caricatures I also give a full money back guarantee. All you need to do is return the original caricature and I will return you your money.
CAN I ORDER AND RECEIVE CARICATURES OVERSEAS?
You certainly can. Ordering is straightforward, but unless you have someone who can pick the caricature up and send it to you I usually only send a digital copy overseas. If you do want the original sent overseas just contact me and we can arrange it.
